EXPLORING HEALTHY MASCULINITY: A Boy’s Life (North Seattle)

Currently, the dominant narrative concerning men in our culture includes ideas like boys don’t cry, boys will be boys, if he’s mean to you it must mean he likes you, and man up. Using pop culture vehicles such as social media, movies, music, and memes, this group will explore the patterns and narratives of
masculinity. We will focus on opening up about what being a man or boy means to us individually, as well as seeking healthier ways of relating to ourselves and each other. This new group is designed for male-identified teens between the ages of 13 to 18 and draws on curriculum from various nationwide programs.

Groups will be held in Seattle at Ryther’s Main Campus on Thursdays, from 5:30 – 7:00 PM, October 10th through December 12th. Off for Thanksgiving, November 28th. Snacks will be provided.

Topics to be discussed:
• Emotion regulation and expression
• Healthy relationships
• Communication and social skills
• Masculinity: When it is healthy? When it is toxic?
• Challenging unhelpful messages and finding more helpful replacements
• Positive identity and body image
• Using pop culture to explore social messages of masculinity

No charge for Ryther clients with Medicaid, co-pay applies for private insurance, and out of pocket cost is $75. For more information or to register, please email Galen Kerrick at GalenK@ryther.org using the subject line ‘A Boy’s Life’.
