How Neuroscience Can Disrupt the Preschool to Prison Pipeline
Presenter Info: Betty Peralta, MIT, LMHCA, IMH-E® (III) is a Child Development Specialist of Alta: Alternative Learning and Therapeutic Avenues, where she trains and consults on child learning and behaviors. She has a Masters In Teaching from Seattle University and taught for 14 years; seven in Seattle Schools and seven overseas in The Dominican Republic, Kuwait, and Tanzania. She also has a Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling from UMass Boston, and was an infant and early childhood mental health therapist with Navos. In addition to her private practice, Betty provides reflective consultation for early intervention agencies and parent coaching for Broadview Emergency Shelter. She is also employed with Seattle Colleges as a parent educator for the cooperative preschool system and Seattle Schools as Substitute Teacher in order to practice her craft.
Description: As you know, conventional discipline—time outs, behavior charts, withholding privileges, and ignoring, can reinforce the stress in children and teens that gave rise to that instinctual behavior in the first place. This is especially true for children struggling with generational trauma and institutionalized racism. Such discipline may push children deeper into a threat response, causing ruptures to important relationships, delaying social emotional development, and jeopardizing futures.
These common approaches are largely responsible for the preschool to prison pipeline, where biases against darker skin, active males, and externalizing behaviors begin a pattern of getting pushed out of schools through expulsion and suspension starting in preschool.
The NeuroRelational Framework (NRF) shows us how to move our lens of behavior from one of compliance to a safety-challenge-threat model. This model prioritizes relational safety, introduces challenge, and watches for threat responses that cue us into bringing the child back into safety. Both children and adults build regulation, connection under conflict, and reflective capacities—all skills that keep our children out of prison and set them safely on a path to fulfilling lives.
Join us in this introduction to the NeuroRelational Framework. Understanding the brain means that we can stop shaming children for where they are in their neurological development. Instead, we can meet all children where they are, grow their social emotional capabilities, and disrupt the preschool to prison pipeline for those most in peril.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to…
- Compare the compliance model of discipline with the NeuroRelational Framework’s safety-challenge-threat model.
- Understand how the NeuroRelational Framework’s brain- body- and relationship-based interventions protect children from the preschool to prison pipeline and help all children learn.
- Use language with colleagues that shifts consultations on children to a safety-challenge-threat lens of behavior.
- Learn about the 3-step protocol for reducing both internalizing and externalizing behaviors in children.
The forum is free, and Ethic CE hours are available for a small fee.
