First Friday Forum

Topic: “Democratic Leadership: because Social Equality is better for everyone

Presenter: Dr. Karen John, via a pre-recorded video, for the virtual conference of the ICASSI (International Committee of Adlerian Summer Schools and Institute.)  The ICASSI Conference, in which Dr. Karen John presented with this particular presentation, was held online, from July 19th through July 31st, 2020.

This upcoming First Friday Free Forum presentation will be hosted via Zoom (video-meeting,) with Anita G. Morales, and Paulina Cuevas Vega being the forum discussion leader and moderator.  After brief introduction, we will first present Dr. Karen John’s recorded presentation, and then Anita and Paulina will be leading the forum discussion.

It is recommended that participants watch at least the first 15-20 minutes of this pre-recorded presentation by Dr. Karen John, prior to attending this Forum discussion, as the highlights of this coming Forum are for thought exchanges, information sharing, as well as respectful discussions among all the Forum participants.  We are curious and eager to hear your thoughts, questions, reflections related to Adlerian leadership, democracy, populism, and more.

Dr. Karen John is a developmental psychologist who works as a researcher, trainer, lecturer, consultant, Adlerian psychotherapist and clinical and Ph.D. supervisor. With over 40 years’ experience in mental health, social care services and educational leadership, training and research, she is the author of over 60 articles, chapters and booklets. She is an editor of the ASIIP Year Book and a member of the ICASSI faculty and board. Her abiding aim is to help individuals, families, organizations and professionals recognize and overcome internal and external obstacles that interfere with their healthy and socially responsible functioning.

 Anita G. Morales grew up in a migrant farm worker family in Eastern Washington, and earned her B.A. and teaching degree from the University of Washington.  Anita served Seattle Public Schools for 35 years, with the first 22 as a classroom teacher. When she retired in 2016, Anita was an Equity & Race Relations Specialist and co-designed and co-facilitated racial equity training for all levels of district staff. She is now an independent consultant.

Paulina Cuevas Vega holds a M.A. degree in Educational Psychology, is a Certified PK-12 School Counselor and also a Positive Discipline Trainer.  She has been teaching parenting classes for more than 10 years, and also has taught and facilitated parenting classes in the U.S.A. and in Chile.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Adler on Social Equality, and how it increases social interest;
  2. How Populism is putting democracy at risk;
  3. Democratic Leadership in Adlerian perspective, systemic elements of it and Social Equality, along with its typical drawbacks;
  4. Democratic Leadership vs Populism & Democratic Leadership in crisis

The forum is free, and two (2) CEU hours are available for this presentation for a small fee.  PSAS members enjoy discounted CEU rates; for non-members, we charge $30 for 2 CEU hours.  If you do desire to obtain the CEU hours for this presentation, please do make sure you mention this in the RSVP email to: psasadler@gmail.com.  We will forward you with information related to the payment methods.  CEU Certificate will be provided in either printed or electronical formats.  Those of you who do not need CEU hours, but would feel like to offer donation to us in organizing this forum discussion, are of course greatly appreciated and welcomed.

Please be noted that all CEU hour fees, received in this coming First Friday Forum, will be donated to the ICASSI (International Committee of Adlerian Summer Schools and Institute).
