Parents, teachers, and social care, health, and other professionals often have little appreciation for the normative developmental needs of children and young people, and how these conflict with social expectations and demands. Reviewing the bio-psycho-social preoccupations and challenges commonly associated with specific age ranges and juxtaposing these with the ages at which behavioral and emotional symptoms and diagnoses first or commonly are noted can sharpen and shift perspectives and approaches. A developmental model and alternative case conceptualizations of diagnoses of children and youth will be presented by Dr. Karen John, psychologist, is an independent researcher, training consultant, Adlerian psychotherapist, and a clinical and leadership supervisor and mentor.
